Congressman Brad Wenstrup, on July 30th, published a press release to promote his July 25th House floor speech on school safety.
The press release, titled "Wenstrup Highlights School Safety Innovation", in part reads: "Last week, Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) delivered a speech on the House floor highlighting some of the innovative work that organizations in Ohio’s Second District are doing to explore how to make our schools safer. Screen Education and EMI Research Solutions, both from Cincinnati, partnered with Stark Statistical Consulting to conduct surveys of student attitudes towards violence, social media, and technology. Bully Bully of Cincinnati developed an anonymous app for reporting intimidation or harassment in schools, with resources for both students and school administrators." The press release contains a full transcript of the Congressman's speech.

On August 14th Screen Education's Michael Mercier will speaking at the luncheon of the Miami Valley Human Resource Association about smartphone addiction and its impact on employee wellness and workplace productivity.
Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R, OH-02) highlighted 2 research studies by Screen Education during his July 25th floor speech on school safety.
The purpose of Congressman Wenstrup's speech was 2 highlight the fact that 2 organizations within his district --- Screen Education and Bully Bully --- are actively working to better understand, and address, the problem of school bullying and violence. In the speech he cited statistics from Screen Education's June, 2018, Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey, which was done in collaboration with EMI Research Solutions and Stark Statistical Consulting. He specifically mentions that Screen Education's survey revealed that 68% of teens witness cyber bullying at least several times per year, that 31% have seen cyber bullying result in physical violence, and that 73% feel that social media use contributes to conditions that can result in school shootings. Later in the speech he also cited findings from Screen Education's 2017 research with teens at Camp Livingston, a summer camp located in Bennington, Indiana. He specifically ighlights how teens are relieved to get away from their phones when they attend an overnight summer camp that doesn't permit smartphones --- that they are generally more engaged with each other and with recreational activities, and that they appreciate the opportunity to get to know each other through face-to-face communication, rather than the digital communication they often engage in with their close friends at home. Michael Mercier, President of Screen Education, and Brian Lamar, VP of Insights at EMI Research Solutions, met with Congressman Wenstrup in early July to discuss this research. It was during that meeting that he decided that he would make this House floor speech. He was particularly interested in the implications our research had for understanding possible causes of school violence --- an issue that is of great concern to him. During the meeting we also proposed future research regarding social media, bullying, and school violence, using Screen Education's Bullying Process Model to frame our discussion. This is the "Bullying Process" diagram we developed to frame our discussion with Congressman Brad Wenstrup about the cyber bullying findings from our Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018, and the implications these findings have for future research on cyber bullying.
Our survey found that 36% of teens witness cyber bullying each week, that 89% find it upsetting when they witness cyber bullying, and that 31% of teens have seen cyber bullying result in physical violence. We also found that 72% of teens feel that social media creates an atmosphere that can contribute to conditions that result in school shootings. Therefore, we wanted a process framework that illustrated the stages in the process by which bullying escalates to physical violence to serve as a focal point for our discussion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT THE "TEEN SMARTPHONE ADDICTION NATIONAL SURVEY/2018" The "Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018" was conducted by Screen Education, EMI Research Solutions, and Stark Statistical Consulting. EMI Research Solutions recruited respondents through the EMI partner network, and conducted a 9-minute online survey between April 18-25, 2018. The sample consists of 1,017 13- to 18-year-olds. This sample size is sufficient for all statistics using the full sample to have margins of error of 3% or less. All 1,017 respondents included in this statistical analysis completed the entire survey, so this criteria applies to all questions reported here The organizations that partnered on the "Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018" are concerned about the toll smartphone addiction is taking on our children. Therefore, in an act of public service each organization donated its time, services, and resources to introduce valuable new insights into the national conversation about smartphone addiction. Forty-nine percent (49%) of teens say that their smartphone shortens their attention span, according to Screen Education's Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018.
Screen Education included this question in the survey because research has shown that our attention spans have become shorter due to our smartphones, and we wanted to see whether teens, who are digital natives, recognize this in themselves. So it is significant that half of them say that their phone indeed does shorten their attention span. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT THE "TEEN SMARTPHONE ADDICTION NATIONAL SURVEY/2018 The "Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018" was conducted by Screen Education, EMI Research Solutions, and Stark Statistical Consulting. A recording of our June 20, 2018, appearance on Cincinnati Edition, a daily talk show on WVXU, Cincinnati's NPR station. The catalyst for the show was the June 21 publication of the findings of our Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018. (Download the report here.) These survey findings informed a broader discussion of how to get teens to put their phones down now that the summer has come. We appeared with Dave Kraft, a teacher at Calvert Catholic in Tiffin, OH, and Eli Cochran, Director of Camp Ernst, a summer camp in Burlington, KY. Screen Education knows both Dave and Eli because we conducted research with them in the past. We met Dave when we presented our model of smartphone addiction at the Ohio Educational Technology Conference, in February in Columbus, OH. Between March and May we conducted 2 surveys for Dave on smartphone addiction --- one of Calvert Catholic students, and another of Calvert Catholic parents. Dave and Screen Education will be applying to present our findings at the 2019 Ohio Educational Technology Conference. We met Eli in 2016, when she agreed to allow us to conduct focus groups with teens attending Camp Ernst during the summer of 2016. Eli and Screen Education were also interviewed on WVXU in January of 2018 to discuss the issue of teen smartphone addiction. And we're thrilled to be working with Eli again this summer, doing more focus groups with teens. Michael Mercier of Screen Education, and Brian Lamar of EMI Research Solutions, will be meeting with Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) on Friday, July 5, to discuss the findings of our Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018.
Congressman Wenstrup is particularly interested in discussing the survey findings that are related to cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is of particular concern to him in light of the many school shootings that have occurred in recent years. The survey of 1,017 teens reveals that 36% of teens witness cyber bullying every week, that 89% find it upsetting, and that 31% have seen it result in physical violence. The survey also asked whether teens feel that social media contributes to conditions that can result in school shootings, and 73% said "yes". Whether or not objective scientific measures would indicate a causal relationship between social media and school shootings is irrelevant; what is important about this finding is that the kids believe that there is a causal relationship, which reflects just how toxic they believe the medium of social media can be. *********************************************************************************************** The "Teen Smartphone Addiction National Survey/2018" was conducted by Screen Education, EMI Research Solutions, and Stark Statistical Consulting.
